About us
Who we are
Agnutmaqan is an Indigenous non-profit that offers housing services on a moderate support level to Indigenous-identifying individuals in the greater Toronto area.
Our clients are potentially dealing with homelessness, health issues, financial barriers and eviction. Our values are based on the medicine wheel and the seven grandfather teachings, which are integrated into our everyday operations.
Since 2006, the Indigenous population has grown at more than four times the growth rate of the non-Indigenous population over the same period. In addition to this, the Indigenous people are greatly overrepresented in the homeless population: the percentage of homeless Indigenous people is over six times their percentage of the population in general. Therefore, we see a need for culturally adequate services for this
community.
Agnutmaqan is led by experienced housing workers who have been working in social services for more than 20 years. One of the key components of this program will be education. Education will start at a grassroots level in each community providing assistance and resources for safe and culturally appropriate community housing. We are currently requesting SEED funding to launch this project as quickly as possible and start serving the community, following that, by early 2025, we plan to start offering workshops from our downtown Toronto location.
