Together, we can

Build a world where all are warm and safe

Medicine Wheel

Medicine wheels represent the alignment and continuous interaction of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual realities.

The circle shape represents the interconnectivity of all aspects of one’s being, including the connection with the natural world. Medicine wheels are frequently believed to be the circle of awareness of the individual self; the circle of knowledge that provides the power we each have over our own lives.

According to NLM, the medicine wheel “has been used by generations of various Native American tribes for health and healing. It embodies the Four Directions, as well as Father Sky, Mother Earth, and Spirit Tree, all of which symbolize dimensions of health and the cycles of life.

In our line of work, the four directions represent the aspects of life: spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical.

What we do

Agnutmaqan offers wrap-around housing services on a moderate support level to Indigenous-identifying individuals in the City of Toronto. Our clients are currently dealing with homelessness and eviction.

We Support

We provide individualized client-centred support and respect the choice of our clients, we listen to what they want and offer them options.

We take Action

We provide support and assistance to BIPOC people in the GTA area that are on the streets, couch surfing, in shelters and second stage housing.

We Provide

Housing resources available to our community will be shared and combined to accommodate the client’s needs within their own communities.

We Prioritize

This program will look at the client’s needs, and prioritize the client’s available housing options, ensuring accessibility to affordable & safe housing.

Catchment Area

Our program will be administered by Indigenous members, primarily for BIPOC clients.  We acknowledge the Black, Indigenous People Of Colour (BIPOC) guidelines and will provide services for all individuals in need with an emphasis on candidates who meet these guidelines.

Education will start at a grassroots level in the community providing assistance and resources for safe and culturally appropriate community housing.

Agnutmaqan is hoping to establish a partnership with NICHI and Batchewana First Nation, up near Sault Ste. Marie (Northern Ontario). They have already developed detailed housing programs for Indigenous populations, both on and off-reserve.

OUR PARTNERS

Agnutmaqan operates in Tkaronto, today known as Toronto, a Mohawk word meaning, “where there are trees standing in the water.”  We express gratitude and respect for the traditional territories of the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in Ontario under Treaty 13 and the Williams Treaties.  Similar to the Mississaugas of the Credit and Chippewa, whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries, we are committed to advancing reconciliation and partnering with Indigenous peoples in our work to provide safe, accessible and sustainable housing for all.
